The farm of Hailu Abebe in Chelchele, in Yirgacheffe district, Gedeo Zone, was established in 2007 and has been built entirely around family labour — every cherry on this lot is handpicked and sorted by Hailu and his family alone. The three hectares sit at 1,975 metres, on red-brown volcanic soil that, combined with more than 190 rainy days a year, gives cherry the time it needs to ripen slowly and develop real complexity.
The farm grows a mix of heirloom varieties — Kurume, Dega, Wolisho, and JARC 74110 — each a traditional Ethiopian landrace named after an indigenous tree from its home region, naturally selected and passed down by local communities over generations. These trees grow beneath a canopy of enset, Cordia africana, and acacia, which support soil health, enrich the cup, and double as food crops for the household.
